Life Underwriting Consultant Senior.

FULL TIMEREMOTESENIOR LEVELFINANCE & LEGAL$93K–126.5K/YR

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Life Underwriting Consultant Senior based in the United States.

The Senior Life Underwriting Consultant evaluates medical and financial risks for both routine and complex life insurance applications, making informed underwriting decisions within delegated authority of up to $5 million. This role combines technical expertise, independent judgment, and strong relationship management to support sound risk assessment and effective distribution partnerships. You will review medical records, financial documentation, and other underwriting evidence to determine appropriate risk classifications in line with established guidelines. Acting as a trusted resource for agents, distribution partners, and internal teams, you will explain decisions and provide guidance on products and underwriting practices. The position also offers opportunities to mentor less experienced colleagues, contribute to departmental projects, and represent the organization at industry events. This is a full-time remote opportunity with occasional travel.

Accountabilities

    • Risk Assessment and Underwriting Decisions: Independently assess medical and financial risks for routine and complex life insurance cases, with delegated sign-off authority of up to $5 million.

    • Case Evaluation: Review medical records, medical examinations, financial documents, telephone interviews, and other underwriting evidence to determine appropriate risk classifications in accordance with established guidelines.

    • Underwriting Documentation: Accurately document risk assessments, supporting information, and underwriting decisions within the relevant systems and applications.

    • Decision Communication: Communicate underwriting outcomes clearly and professionally to agents, field distribution teams, and Field Marketing Organizations (FMOs).

    • Distribution Partner Support: Build strong relationships with distribution partners by explaining underwriting decisions and providing guidance on strategies for presenting adverse decisions to clients.

    • Product and Process Education: Educate agents and distribution partners on available products, underwriting requirements, and underwriting philosophy.

    • Stakeholder Coordination: Respond to case-related inquiries and provide timely updates to internal and external stakeholders, including distribution partners, the medical community, reinsurers, and vendors.

    • Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing: Support the development of less experienced underwriters and Enterprise Operations colleagues through mentoring, coaching, and knowledge sharing.

    • Projects and Collaboration: Participate in departmental initiatives and projects as assigned, contributing underwriting expertise and supporting continuous improvement.

    • Industry Representation: Attend field visits and industry events, deliver presentations, and represent the organization to distribution partners when required.

    • Technology and AI Adoption: Utilize artificial intelligence tools and resources, including generative AI, to support relevant work activities.

    • Requirements:

      • Professional Experience: At least 4 years of experience in life insurance or long-term care underwriting.

      • Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Medical Sciences, or a related field is required. Equivalent professional experience may also be considered.

      • Underwriting Expertise: Strong knowledge of medical and financial risk assessment, underwriting documentation, and risk classification practices.

      • Analytical Judgment: Ability to independently evaluate complex cases, interpret diverse sources of evidence, and make sound decisions in accordance with underwriting guidelines.

      • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical underwriting decisions clearly to agents, distribution partners, and other stakeholders.

      • Relationship Management: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive relationships with internal teams, external partners, medical professionals, reinsurers, and vendors.

      • Mentoring Ability: Confidence in sharing expertise, supporting colleagues, and helping develop less experienced underwriting professionals.

      • Organization and Accuracy: Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage case documentation, priorities, and multiple stakeholder requests effectively.

      • Technology Adaptability: Willingness and ability to use relevant digital tools and artificial intelligence resources, including generative AI.

      • Travel Availability: Ability to travel up to 10% of the time for field visits, presentations, and industry-related activities.

      • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This requirement applies to applicants holding nonimmigrant visas, including H-1B, H-4, L-1, L-2, TN, OPT, and CPT.

      • Benefits:

        • Salary Range: Annual base salary of $93,000–$126,500, depending on geographic location, experience, skills, competencies, education, and internal equity.

        • Annual Incentive: Eligibility for an annual incentive program.

        • Medical Coverage: Choice of comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans.

        • Health Accounts: Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs).

        • Retirement and Financial Support: 401(k) plan with a generous company match and a student loan retirement program.

        • Paid Leave: Generous annual paid leave.

        • Additional Coverage: Life insurance.

        • Education Support: Tuition reimbursement.

        • Campus Amenities: Access to discounted amenities, including an onsite health center, child development center, fitness facility, convenience store, and two cafeterias.
