Director of Communications.

FULL TIMEREMOTELEADERSHIPSALES & MARKETING$120K–160K/YR

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director of Communications based in the United States.

As Director of Communications, you will shape and lead the organization's communications strategy, strengthening its visibility and influence across the health and reentry policy landscape. You will translate complex policy issues into clear, compelling messages that resonate with policymakers, government agencies, community organizations, advocates, and the wider public. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will serve as a strategic partner and a member of the senior leadership team. This role offers the opportunity to build scalable communications processes, establish a consistent organizational voice, and expand digital and media engagement. You will oversee content development, marketing initiatives, public relations, and performance measurement while supporting rapid responses to emerging policy developments. Joining a growing national nonprofit, you will help amplify work that improves access to healthcare for people returning to their communities after incarceration.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will lead the organization's communications strategy and execution, ensuring that messaging, content, and marketing initiatives support its mission, strategic priorities, and growing national presence.

    • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director on external positioning, branding, messaging, and narrative development.

    • Develop, implement, and regularly update a comprehensive communications strategy and supporting calendar aligned with organizational priorities.

    • Establish and maintain a consistent organizational voice, messaging framework, and visual identity across communication channels.

    • Create compelling materials that communicate the organization's value and work to diverse audiences, including policymakers, state and federal agencies, local officials, advocates, stakeholders, and the general public.

    • Develop and execute marketing strategies for the State Technical Assistance Center (STAC) and other key areas of work.

    • Oversee the content development process from concept to publication, including coordination with external contractors and design vendors.

    • Write, edit, and manage content across multiple formats, including social media posts, newsletters, blogs, op-eds, and press releases.

    • Strengthen the organization's digital presence through its website, social media platforms, and email communications.

    • Manage relationships with web development, design, and other external communications partners.

    • Monitor digital performance metrics, report on results, and use insights to improve audience reach and engagement.

    • Coordinate rapid-response communications related to relevant policy developments and breaking news.

    • Develop and maintain an editorial calendar that promotes publications, policy initiatives, and stakeholder engagement.

    • Build and maintain media contacts and support organizational leaders and staff in engaging directly with reporters.

    • Oversee external public relations resources and relationships as needed.

    • Establish scalable communications processes, workflows, templates, and shared standards that support organizational growth and consistency.

    • Requirements

The ideal candidate is an experienced communications leader with strong strategic judgment, exceptional writing skills, and the ability to build effective processes in a collaborative, evolving nonprofit environment.

      • At least 10 years of experience in communications, ideally within policy, nonprofit, membership association, consulting, or government environments.

      • Bachelor's degree required.

      • Proven track record of developing and executing high-impact communications strategies.

      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear and engaging messages for diverse audiences.

      • Demonstrated leadership experience, including establishing or scaling communications processes, workflows, templates, and organizational standards.

      • Experience with digital communications tools, content management systems, social media platforms, and basic performance analytics.

      • Strong strategic thinking and a builder mindset, with the ability to turn a vision into practical, scalable plans and identify opportunities to increase impact.

      • Experience managing external contractors, vendors, and communications partners.

      • Ability to work collaboratively while remaining comfortable taking ownership of projects and handling hands-on execution.

      • Intellectual curiosity, humility, and openness to feedback, with a willingness to learn from diverse perspectives and adapt in a dynamic environment.

      • Ability to operate effectively in a nonpartisan environment that brings together stakeholders with different backgrounds, priorities, and perspectives.

      • Familiarity with health policy, criminal justice, or related fields, or the ability and motivation to quickly develop expertise in complex policy areas.

      • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a results-oriented approach to managing multiple priorities and deadlines.

      • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently within a small, remote or hybrid team.

      • Positive attitude, good judgment, and a commitment to building an inclusive environment centered on collaboration, learning, and shared success.

      • Benefits

        • Annual salary ranging from $120,000 to $160,000, commensurate with experience.

        • Compensation may be adjusted based on the candidate's location.

        • Competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance.

        • Access to a 401(k) retirement savings plan.

        • Fully remote position for candidates based in the continental United States.

        • Opportunity to join a growing national nonprofit and contribute to meaningful work at the intersection of healthcare access and successful community reentry.
