Vice President of Finance.

FULL TIMEREMOTELEADERSHIPFINANCE & LEGAL$185K–200K/MO

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Vice President of Finance based in the United States.

The Vice President of Finance will serve as a strategic leader and trusted advisor, guiding the financial direction of a growing, mission-driven education nonprofit. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this hands-on role combines executive-level financial strategy with oversight of accounting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and financial operations. You will partner with senior leaders and department heads to translate complex financial data into actionable insights, strengthen organizational decision-making, and support sustainable growth. Leading and developing a high-performing finance team will be central to the role, alongside building scalable systems and processes. The position offers an opportunity to influence organizational strategy while supporting innovation in education and advancing a commitment to racial equity.

Accountabilities:

    • Serve as a member of the leadership and strategy execution teams, advising the CEO, COO, and department leaders on financial strategy, risks, opportunities, and resource allocation.

    • Lead, develop, and retain a high-performing Finance Team, fostering accountability, collaboration, professional growth, and alignment with organizational priorities.

    • Direct the annual budgeting process, establish financial benchmarks, and oversee ongoing budget monitoring and forecasting in partnership with department leaders.

    • Lead monthly budget-versus-actual reviews, identify variances, and recommend practical action plans to address financial risks and investment opportunities.

    • Develop financial models, dashboards, and performance metrics to support strategic planning, scenario analysis, and the growth of new products, services, and digital platforms.

    • Oversee monthly and year-end financial reporting, ensuring accurate and timely reports for senior leadership, the Finance Committee, the Board, funders, and other external stakeholders.

    • Direct day-to-day accounting operations, financial close processes, general ledger oversight, and financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.

    • Oversee nonprofit fund accounting, government funding, grants, restricted funds, philanthropic revenue forecasting, and related reporting requirements.

    • Manage cash flow, liquidity planning, revenue forecasting, capital planning, and banking relationships.

    • Lead annual audits, tax filings, financial compliance, and relationships with external auditors; serve as the primary finance liaison to the Board's Finance Committee.

    • Establish and maintain effective internal controls, financial policies, procedures, and systems that protect organizational assets and support operational efficiency.

    • Review vendor and customer contracts for financial terms, risk, and compliance, and oversee insurance, business filings, and multi-state sales tax obligations.

    • Collaborate across the organization to improve financial processes, advance the mission and strategic direction, and contribute to a culture grounded in inclusion and racial equity.

    • Requirements:

      • Bachelor's degree required; an MBA or master's degree in finance or a related discipline is preferred. CPA certification is a plus.

      • At least 12 years of management experience, including five or more years in a senior finance leadership position.

      • Required experience working in nonprofit organizations; experience in education or familiarity with school systems is an advantage.

      • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting systems, fund accounting, government funding compliance, and grant-related financial management.

      • Demonstrated experience building, improving, and scaling financial systems, processes, and teams within a nonprofit environment.

      • Exceptional financial analysis, business judgment, forecasting, budgeting, and problem-solving skills.

      • Ability to translate complex financial information into clear reports, meaningful narratives, and actionable recommendations for both financial and non-financial stakeholders.

      • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial controls, audit processes, regulatory compliance, and financial reporting.

      • Excellent communication, facilitation, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to work effectively with senior leaders, board members, colleagues, and external partners.

      • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

      • A hands-on, solutions-oriented leadership style, with sound judgment, adaptability, initiative, and a willingness to make and communicate difficult recommendations.

      • Commitment to inclusive leadership, transparency, collaboration, racial equity, and the role of education in creating positive social impact.

      • Benefits:

        • Annual base salary: Based on candidate location and experience:

          • Zone A – San Francisco Bay Area, New York, and Los Angeles: $185,000–$200,000.
