About the role
The Director, Digital Shelf (Walmart Retail Analytics & Platform Solutions) is a client-facing leader who uncovers why client items are winning or losing on Walmart's digital shelf and turns those findings into clear, prioritized action plans. Using both data and practical judgment, this leader identifies opportunities and gaps across a client's catalog and recommends the actions needed to improve discoverability, conversion, availability, and sales across Walmart's omnichannel ecosystem.
This role is VML's go-to expert on Walmart Supplier One, with Walmart Scintilla (formerly Walmart Luminate) and Retail Link as key supporting tools. It is both strategic and tactical: the Director explains why performance changed, connecting item setup, content quality, catalog and inventory health, and shopper data to pinpoint root causes, and then makes the item-level changes needed to fix them. They partner with internal and client teams to make sure every insight leads to a clear owner and a measurable result.
This role also supports Walmart merchant readiness for client teams, shaping the insights behind joint business plans, line reviews, and business reviews, and helps build the playbooks and frameworks that make Digital Shelf analysis repeatable across VML's Commerce Connections practice.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supplier One, Walmart Systems & Root Cause Analysis
- Serve as VML's lead expert in Walmart Supplier One, making hands-on, item-level changes (item setup, content, attributes, and catalog fixes) and monitoring content quality scores, in-stock rates, OTIF, inventory health, and buy-box performance to resolve issues affecting items at shelf.
- Use Walmart Scintilla (Channel Performance, Shopper Behavior, and Customer Perception) and Retail Link (DSS) to add sales and shopper context to Supplier One findings.
- Lead Digital Shelf root cause analysis for client catalogs and items, combining data (sales, traffic, conversion, in-stock, search rank, and content scores) with qualitative review (content and imagery, ratings and reviews, and competitive positioning) to explain why items are over- or under-performing.
- Analyze omnichannel sales, fulfillment (Pickup, Delivery, Shipping), shopper trends, and pricing or promotional impact to identify what is driving share gains or losses and size the opportunity.
- Use AI-enabled tools, including Marty for Scintilla and WPP Open, to spot issues such as out-of-stock risk earlier and act before they impact sales.
Client Leadership & Walmart Retailer Strategy
- Act as a trusted advisor to client stakeholders, clearly communicating catalog- and item-level opportunities, gaps, and recommended actions.
- Build scorecards and insight-driven narratives for Walmart joint business planning (JBP), line reviews, and quarterly business reviews (QBRs) that help clients strengthen merchant relationships.
- Turn complex retail data and platform changes into clear action plans with defined owners, expected impact, and success measures, and carry out item-level changes directly where needed.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Discoverability & Connections, Analytics, Strategy, Product, Technology, and Delivery teams so insights turn into coordinated execution.
- Convert Supplier One and Scintilla findings into clear briefs for content optimization, catalog health, and supply chain improvements, and track the resulting impact.
- Share Walmart insights and platform changes across Commerce Connections so teams can anticipate and respond to shifts.
Platform Enablement & Team Development
- Develop and maintain Supplier One and Scintilla best practices, standard operating procedures, and root cause frameworks that standardize how VML resolves issues at shelf.
- Lead internal training and platform guides that build team fluency in Walmart data and Digital Shelf operations.
- Identify new Walmart platform and data opportunities that expand VML's commerce offering.
- Improve analytical efficiency, accuracy, and workflows across client engagements.
- Mentor team members in Supplier One, Scintilla, root cause analysis, and insight storytelling.
- Model and foster a collaborative team culture grounded in Curiosity, Candor, and Connection.
