About us

Fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. UKAEA leads the way in realizing fusion energy, partnering with industry and research organisations to achieve ground-breaking advancements. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid by developing the power stations of tomorrow and the skilled workforce to deliver them.

About the job

As a Senior Facilities Technician within UKAEA’s Waste Services Group, you’ll help maintain the safe, reliable and efficient operation of specialist facilities that support the development of technologies for sustainable fusion energy. You’ll apply your technical and practical expertise to facility maintenance, engineering projects and waste processing equipment, helping to minimise operational risks and ensure compliance with relevant legislation. This is an opportunity to take technical ownership, support the development of new capabilities and contribute to the delivery of fusion energy research.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Maintain the safe and efficient operation of Waste Services facilities, plant, equipment and infrastructure.
  • Diagnose equipment and facility issues, monitor performance and support corrective and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate contractor activities, prepare work packages and oversee delivery to ensure work meets safety requirements and technical specifications.
  • Plan and track maintenance activities, maintain accurate maintenance records and lead regular maintenance review meetings.
  • Support Facility Responsible Officers with engineering projects, planned maintenance, corrective work and the introduction of new equipment.
  • Contribute to the design, construction, installation and commissioning of waste processing equipment and systems.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, risk assessments, method statements and reports in accordance with established procedures and safe systems of work.
  • Provide technical advice within your area of expertise, supporting engineering activities and liaising with internal and external contacts.
  • Allocate tasks and provide technical direction to contracted operatives and apprentices, ensuring work meets required safety and quality standards.
  • Support facility planning, resource coordination, emergency and on-call arrangements, and the wider development of technical capability within Waste Services.

What You’ll Bring

  • An HNC in Engineering or an equivalent qualification, or significant relevant technical and operational experience in a similar role.
  • IOSH Managing Safely certification or an equivalent qualification.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a radioactive environment, including knowledge of contamination control and relevant processes.
  • Proven experience preparing and working to safe systems of work, including risk assessments and method statements.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, schematics and technical documentation, and using asset management and computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint, or equivalent software.

UKAEA is an onsite organisation, and this role requires regular onsite presence (5 days a week) in line with business needs. We actively support flexible working arrangements where this is compatible with the role.
