We are looking for an experienced HGV Class 1 Driver / Shunter to join our Skelmersdale depot. This role will carry out Class 1 driving duties alongside yard shunting responsibilities. The role involves the safe movement of vehicles and trailers, ensuring efficient site operations and adherence to all safety and compliance standards.
Shift pattern: 4 on 4 off Nights, 6pm to 6am (40.25 hours per week)
Pay Rate: £15.35 per hour, plus:
- £1.00 per hour 4 on 4 off shift supplement
- £1.25 per hour night shift allowance
- Overtime paid at 30% extra of the hourly rate
Potential earnings: Up to £17.60 per hour on standard night shifts.
What you'll be doing:
This role combines both HGV driving and yard shunting responsibilities. Key duties include:
- Safely and professionally delivering palletised goods to Regional Distribution Centres, mainly via backdoor tip deliveries.
- Completing occasional driver-tip, multi-drop deliveries, and overnight stays when required.
- Operating a yard shunter to move trailers safely on and off loading bays and position trailers for loading and unloading.
- Managing the flow of traffic within the yard and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Carrying out daily vehicle and trailer inspections, defect reporting, and associated paperwork.
- Ensuring compliance with company procedures, health and safety standards, tachograph regulations, and the Road Transport Directive.
- Liaising with transport, warehouse, goods-in, and operations teams to ensure efficient loading, unloading, and delivery activities.
- Completing PODs, vehicle downloads, trailer checklists, and other transport documentation accurately.
- Supporting fleet administration, including monitoring services, MOTs, fuel checks, and reporting maintenance requirements.
- Maintaining high standards of customer service, professionalism, appearance, and yard housekeeping at all times.
What we're looking for:
- At least 2 years yard shunting experience is strongly preferred.
- Valid C+E License.
- Minimum 12 months’ HGV Class 1 driving experience preferred
- No more than 6 points on your license and no DD or DR code convictions.
- Current valid UK Driver CPC qualification card and Digital Tachograph cards.
- Good understanding of Driver’s Hours and Working Time Directive legislation.
- Ability to complete vehicle checks and report defects correctly.
- Commitment to on-site health and safety requirements.
- Excellent communication skills and a professional approach.
