Niche Tech Skills That Get You Hired in Norway & Sweden

2026-09-22 · Petter Larsen

Most "top skills" lists tell you what you already know: Python, Java, JavaScript, AWS, Docker. Those matter (see our rankings for Norway and Sweden), but they're also what every other applicant writes on their CV.

This post is about the next layer for developer and tech jobs in Norway and Sweden: tools, frameworks and certifications that show up in fewer ads, but often decide who gets the interview. We went through 5,244 tech job ads from 2026 and left out the mainstream skills, so everything below is what's left.

Niche tech skills in Norwegian tech job ads, 2026

Niche tech skills in Swedish tech job ads, 2026

1. Terraform and Infrastructure as Code

SkillNorwaySweden
Infrastructure as Code11.5%7.4%
Terraform9.3%7.0%
Ansible2.8%2.7%
Bicep1.4%1.0%
Helm1.3%1.1%
Argo CD1.2%1.3%
Pulumi0.5%0.6%

Infrastructure as Code is the #1 niche skill in Norway, and Terraform is by far the most named tool. In Norway it's mentioned about as often as Docker (9.4%). Bicep, Azure's own IaC language, is far behind, even in Azure-heavy Norway.

Cheap way to add it to your CV: deploy a side project with Terraform, including the network, database and CI/CD pipeline, and put the code on GitHub.

2. Which CI/CD tools do employers in Norway and Sweden use?

ToolNorwaySweden
GitHub Actions4.0%4.6%
Azure DevOps3.4%5.3%
GitLab2.1%2.7%
Jenkins1.3%7.0%

CI/CD itself is mainstream (21.3% in Norway, 31.7% in Sweden), but the tools differ. Jenkins is the most mentioned CI tool in Sweden, five times as common as in Norway, where GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps lead. Jenkins experience is a real plus if you're applying in Sweden.

3. Kafka: the backend differentiator

SkillNorwaySweden
Kafka4.2%4.3%
Event-driven architecture3.9%4.4%
RabbitMQ0.9%1.6%
Azure Service Bus1.2%0.9%
gRPC0.5%1.1%

Kafka is in more than 4% of tech ads in both countries. That's more than GraphQL (1.5% and 2.6%) and MongoDB (1% and 2.8%), which makes event streaming one of the best differentiators for backend developers in Norway and Sweden.

Cheap way to add it: build a small producer and consumer (orders and invoices, say) with Kafka in Docker, and be ready to talk about ordering, retries and idempotency.

4. Test automation: Sweden's top niche skill

SkillNorwaySweden
Test automation (any tool)4.3%10.6%
TDD1.2%2.5%
Playwright0.7%1.1%
JUnit0.3%1.3%
Cypress0.1%0.8%
Jest0.1%0.8%
pytest0.1%0.8%
Robot Framework0.1%0.7%
Postman0.4%0.3%
Selenium0.1%0.3%

Sweden asks for test automation 2.5 times as often as Norway, and it's the #1 niche skill there. Employers ask for the practice more than any tool, so describe what you automated (unit, integration, end-to-end, CI gates), not only which framework you used.

Playwright is the most mentioned end-to-end framework, ahead of Cypress and far ahead of Selenium. If you're learning one today, pick Playwright. In Sweden, JUnit and Robot Framework are worth knowing too. Browse QA engineer jobs in Sweden.

5. Observability: Grafana, Prometheus and OpenTelemetry

ToolNorwaySweden
Grafana3.5%3.5%
OpenTelemetry1.0%1.9%
Prometheus1.2%1.4%
Splunk1.4%0.4%
Elastic / ELK0.7%1.1%
Datadog0.6%0.6%

Grafana is the most named observability tool in both countries, well ahead of commercial tools like Datadog. OpenTelemetry, the vendor-neutral standard for traces and metrics, is already at 1.9% in Sweden.

Cheap way to add it: instrument one of your services with OpenTelemetry, send metrics to Prometheus and build a Grafana dashboard with an alert.

6. The modern data stack in Norway: Databricks, dbt and Fabric

ToolNorwaySweden
Databricks6.0%2.5%
Power BI4.8%2.3%
dbt3.7%1.3%
Snowflake3.3%1.4%
Microsoft Fabric3.0%0.5%
Apache Spark2.2%2.0%
BigQuery1.2%2.0%
Airflow1.1%1.3%

Norwegian data teams have clear favourites. Databricks leads, and dbt, Snowflake and Microsoft Fabric are two to six times more common than in Sweden. If you're moving into data engineering in Norway, Databricks or dbt on top of Python and SQL is a strong combination. Browse data engineer jobs in Norway.

7. LLMs and generative AI, even outside AI roles

SkillNorwaySweden
LLMs / generative AI10.4%9.0%
Machine learning10.3%7.1%
PyTorch1.4%1.5%
TensorFlow0.8%1.2%

LLMs and generative AI appear in about one in ten tech ads, far more often than any ML framework. And not only in data science jobs: backend developers, platform engineers and even requirement engineers get asked about building with language models, RAG or AI agents.

Cheap way to add it: build a small RAG app (documents in, questions out) and write down what you learned about evaluation, cost and guardrails.

8. Security tooling

SkillNorwaySweden
Firewalls4.5%0.9%
IAM4.2%2.1%
SIEM / Microsoft Sentinel2.2%0.8%
Zero Trust2.1%0.4%
OAuth / OpenID Connect1.3%2.0%
Penetration testing0.9%0.3%
OWASP0.7%0.5%

Norway has more security and infrastructure roles in our data, which shows in firewalls, IAM, SIEM and Zero Trust. It also asks far more often for Microsoft admin skills like Entra ID and Intune (see Norway vs Sweden tech jobs). In Sweden, security shows up more on the developer side, with OAuth / OpenID Connect ahead of Norway.

9. Embedded jobs in Sweden: the toolchain

SkillNorwaySweden
Embedded Linux1.4%4.9%
MATLAB0.9%4.8%
RTOS1.0%3.6%
Functional safety (ISO 26262, IEC 61508)0%3.4%
Simulink0.1%3.0%
AUTOSAR0%2.4%

Sweden's embedded sector shows up clearly here, and these skills barely exist in Norwegian ads. If you come from automotive or industrial embedded work, Sweden is where that experience is valued most.

10. Do tech certifications matter in Norway and Sweden?

CertificationNorwaySweden
ITIL4.0%0.5%
Azure / Microsoft (AZ-900, Azure Administrator, SC-…)1.8%1.0%
Security (CISSP, CISM, OSCP, GIAC…)1.5%0.2%
Scrum / SAFe (PSM, CSM, PSPO…)<0.1%0.3%
AWS0.2%0.3%
ISTQB0.2%0.3%
Google Cloud0.1%0.2%
Kubernetes (CKA / CKAD)<0.1%<0.1%

Rarely. Certifications show up in a small share of tech ads, and in the ads we reviewed, most mentions say "an advantage" rather than "required". Norwegian and Swedish employers care much more about what you've built. The exceptions:

  • ITIL is the most mentioned certification-style framework, typically in IT operations and service management roles in Norway.
  • Microsoft and Azure certifications are the most mentioned cloud certifications. Fundamentals like AZ-900 and MS-900 show up in IT support ads, associate-level ones (Azure Administrator, Azure Developer) in cloud roles.
  • Security certifications matter in security roles: CISSP and CISM for governance and architecture, OSCP and GIAC for hands-on work.
  • AWS is in 13.2% of Norwegian tech ads, but AWS certifications are in only 0.2%. For AWS roles, a deployed project usually says more than a certificate. Some employers even offer to pay for certification as a benefit.

A certification is worth it if you're switching into cloud, IT operations or security, or lack formal experience in an area. If you already have hands-on experience, spend the time on a project instead.

11. Standards and regulations: GDPR, WCAG, ISO 27001, NIS2

Standard / regulationNorwaySweden
GDPR / data protection10.3%4.4%
Accessibility / universal design (WCAG)3.0%2.2%
ISO 270012.9%0.5%
NIS2 / DORA2.2%0.3%
  • GDPR is in one in ten Norwegian tech ads. If you've built features with consent, data minimisation and deletion in mind, say so.
  • WCAG (universell utforming in Norway, tillgänglighet in Sweden) is one of the cheapest ways for a frontend developer to stand out. In Norway, universal design of public-facing ICT solutions is required by law, based on WCAG, and the EU's European Accessibility Act has applied since June 2025.
  • ISO 27001 and NIS2 / DORA (EU cybersecurity and financial-sector resilience rules) show up mainly in Norwegian security, platform and finance roles.

Skills that are rarer than you'd think

Some skills get a lot of attention online but barely appear in Norwegian and Swedish job ads:

SkillNorwaySweden
Jira1.8%4.0%
Figma1.2%0.9%
Excel0.6%0.7%
PHP0.6%1.1%
Flutter0.5%0.4%
Scala0.4%0.9%
Ruby0.2%0.4%
Selenium0.1%0.3%
Elixir / Erlang0%0.2% each

Don't spend CV space on Jira, Confluence or Excel. And Flutter, PHP and Ruby are fine skills, but you'll find far fewer openings with them than with React Native, Java or .NET.

How we measured it

We analyzed 5,244 tech job ads posted in 2026: 2,058 in Norway and 3,186 in Sweden. Each skill is counted once per ad, and percentages are shares of tech ads in that country. The full method is in the Norway and Sweden posts.

For the niche ranking we left out the mainstream skills: the big programming languages, SQL, AWS/Azure/GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, React/Angular/Vue, Node.js, Spring, Git, Linux, HTML/CSS, CI/CD, REST, microservices, Agile, Scrum and DevOps.
