Move to Norway from the US: Work Visa & Tech Jobs 2026
2026-10-08 · Petter Larsen
Moving to Norway from the US as a software developer comes down to one thing: the job offer. Once you have it, the Norwegian work visa is usually a formality, because almost every tech job pays well above the salary requirement.
- Visa: skilled worker permit from UDI, based on a job offer.
- Salary requirement: 545,400 NOK a year. Even junior developers have a median of 670,000 NOK.
- Median developer salary: 867,000 NOK (about $90,000) a year.
- $100k+: two in three developers with 8+ years of experience.
- Permanent residence: after three years.
How do you move to Norway from the US?
- Get a signed offer from a Norwegian employer.
- Apply for a skilled worker visa with UDI. Your employer confirms the offer online first.
- Register with the police for your residence card, then get a Norwegian ID number for banking, tax and a doctor.
- Bring your family on the same application.
What do you need for a Norwegian work visa?
- A job offer, full-time or at least 80%.
- A degree, or about six years of documented work experience.
- Norwegian pay levels: at least 545,400 NOK a year for bachelor's-level jobs and 624,700 NOK for master's-level jobs.
Americans can enter Norway visa-free while the application is processed, and with a Norwegian employer the police can approve an early start before the permit is ready. Permits last up to three years, and you can switch to a similar job without a new one. See UDI's skilled worker page for current thresholds.
What is the software developer salary in Norway in USD?
Lower than US Big Tech, but among the highest outside the US. From kode24's 2025 survey of 1,811 developers:
- Median: 867,000 NOK, about $90,000.
- Seniors (8+ years): 1,050,000 NOK, about $109,000.
- Top 10% of seniors: 1,400,000 NOK ($146,000) or more.
To earn $100,000 (about 960,000 NOK), target consultancies or product companies in Oslo. With 8+ years you need to be in the top two-thirds of earners, and with 3–7 years in the top 20%. Full numbers on our Norway developer salary page.
On top: a 5–7% employer pension at many tech companies, five weeks of vacation and public healthcare at no extra cost.
How are Americans taxed in Norway?
Effective tax on a developer salary is typically 27–35%, healthcare included. You still file a US return, but the foreign tax credit usually prevents double taxation, and a social security agreement keeps you from paying into both systems.
How do you get a tech job in Norway from the US?
- Target English-speaking jobs. 18% of tech job ads in Norway are open to English speakers, mostly in Oslo.
- Lead with seniority. Employers wait for a visa far more often for senior engineers and rare skills.
- Try startups. They rarely require Norwegian and often hire from abroad.

FAQ
Can I move to Norway first and look for a job?
You can visit for 90 days and interview, but not work. Get the offer first.
How long does a Norwegian work visa take?
It depends on UDI's workload: check the current waiting times. With an early start from the police, the wait matters less.
