FULL TIMEREMOTELEADERSHIP

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a System Executive Director, Health Information Management, Coding & Clinical Documentation Integrity based in the United States.

The System Executive Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for health information management services across a geographically distributed healthcare network. This executive-level role oversees health information management, medical coding, clinical documentation integrity, records management, and regulatory compliance to ensure accurate, secure, and high-quality health information. You will drive enterprise-wide performance improvement, strengthen clinical documentation practices, and align information management priorities with financial and operational objectives. Working closely with clinical, revenue cycle, legal, compliance, and technology leaders, you will advance information governance and support effective electronic health record optimization. The position combines enterprise strategy, regulatory expertise, operational excellence, and people leadership in a complex, mission-driven healthcare environment. This is an opportunity to influence system-wide standards, develop high-performing teams, and support organizational growth while safeguarding the integrity of the legal health record.

Accountabilities:

  • Enterprise Strategy and Leadership: Develop and execute health information management strategies, goals, and initiatives aligned with organizational priorities, establishing consistent standards and performance expectations across hospitals and outpatient care locations.
  • Health Information Management Operations: Oversee system-wide HIMS operations, including medical coding, clinical documentation integrity (CDI), documentation support, release of information, records management, document imaging, forms management, and related administrative functions.
  • Performance and Quality Improvement: Establish key performance indicators, monitor operational results, and implement process improvements that enhance service quality, efficiency, accuracy, and revenue cycle performance across multiple locations.
  • Legal Health Record Governance: Serve as the custodian of the legal health record, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, accessibility, and integrity of clinical documentation. Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and medical staff requirements that support compliant documentation practices.
  • Coding and Clinical Documentation Integrity: Lead coding and CDI programs to improve documentation quality, support appropriate reimbursement, strengthen clinical accuracy, and reduce preventable denials.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure adherence to HIPAA and applicable federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies. Oversee compliance with relevant requirements, including CMS, The Joint Commission, California Title 22, CMIA, FDA, and NIH standards, as applicable.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with clinical, revenue cycle, legal, compliance, technology, and operational leaders to improve information governance, optimize electronic health record systems, prevent denials, and align documentation practices with enterprise objectives.
  • Financial and Vendor Management: Develop and manage operating and capital budgets, oversee vendor relationships, monitor business-unit performance, and identify opportunities to improve resource utilization and operational value.
  • Organizational Change and Innovation: Redesign workflows, implement leading practices, and introduce innovative solutions that strengthen health information management processes while minimizing disruption to clinical and administrative operations.
  • Leadership and Talent Development: Recruit, develop, coach, and retain high-performing leaders and teams. Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and service-oriented leadership.
  • Expansion and Integration Support: Support acquisitions, new facilities, and organizational expansion by ensuring that health information management requirements, documentation standards, coding practices, and compliance processes are effectively integrated.
  • Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or a related field is required. A master's degree is strongly preferred.
  • Professional Experience: At least 10 years of experience in health information management, including a minimum of seven years in a leadership capacity with responsibility for complex operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Professional Certification: Current Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification is required.
  • Professional Memberships: Membership in the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the California Health Information Association (CHIA) is required.
  • HIMS Expertise: Extensive knowledge of health information management operations, legal health records, release of information, medical coding, clinical documentation integrity, records management, and information governance.
  • Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge: Strong understanding of HIPAA, CMS requirements, The Joint Commission standards, California Title 22, CMIA, and relevant FDA and NIH requirements.
  • Coding and Reimbursement Knowledge: Familiarity with ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, diagnosis-related groups (DRGs), and ambulatory payment classifications (APCs), including their application to coding accuracy, documentation quality, and revenue cycle performance.
  • Enterprise Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading multiple management levels across geographically dispersed healthcare facilities, with the ability to establish consistent processes and drive system-wide performance.
  • Strategic and Operational Skills: Proven ability to develop operational strategies, manage budgets, establish performance metrics, improve workflows, oversee vendors, and lead complex transformation initiatives.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Management: Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and collaborate across clinical and administrative functions.
  • Technology and Systems Experience: Experience working with electronic health record systems and health information technologies. Experience within a large healthcare system using multiple EHR platforms is highly preferred.
  • Leadership Approach: Strong coaching, organizational development, change management, and decision-making capabilities, with a commitment to ethical practices, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Benefits:

  • Competitive Compensation: Published hourly pay range of approximately $92.10 to $153.81, depending on professional experience, qualifications, and work location.
