The Role We’re looking for an Engineering Manager, Conversational AI to lead a team of engineers who build the technology behind our conversations with residents across SMS, email, voice, and chat, working closely with a product owner. This is the entry point into people leadership on our engineering management track, with a clear path to Sr. Engineering Manager as your scope and organizational reach grow. You’ll be a player-coach: technically grounded and credible in design discussions, while focused on building the people, culture, and conditions that let your team thrive. The ideal candidate multiplies impact through their people and finds real meaning in helping engineers grow. What you'll do day-to-day: Stay technically grounded: participate in design discussions, understand the systems your team builds, and engage directly when your team needs your depth. Shape your team’s technical direction in partnership with your engineers, and engage across the broader engineering organization to promote consistency and share perspective. Remove blockers: resolve ambiguities, clear organizational friction, and escalate where needed to keep your team moving. Own the health of your team’s systems, advocating for reliability, maintainability, and automation alongside delivery, including observability of AI systems in production (performance, quality, and cost). Evaluate technical risk and help your team make sound decisions, even when the path forward isn’t clear. Partner with your Product counterpart to define and execute the team roadmap, translating resident needs into clear technical plans that connect to business goals and company strategy. Communicate clearly and proactively with your team, stakeholders, and engineering leadership, especially when the news is hard, and give feedback that is clear, specific, and actionable. Use delivery data, team health signals, and engineering metrics to see what’s working and what needs attention, and stay current on engineering and management practices, including how AI is changing the way software is built. Build a high-performing, inclusive, and psychologically safe team: coach through regular 1:1s, goal-setting, and career growth conversations, and manage performance with clarity and care. Lead hiring end-to-end, delegate effectively, help your team use AI tooling to automate the mundane, and model curiosity, humility, a bias to action, and genuine care for others. What You Bring We’re looking for an experienced engineer ready to lead: technically credible, invested in developing people, and skilled at creating clarity for the teams and partners around them. Required Qualifications 5+ years of professional software development experience, including leading technical work within or across teams. Demonstrated technical credibility: you can engage meaningfully in design decisions and understand the systems your team owns. Experience managing or mentoring engineers, with a track record of helping others grow and a genuine investment in developing people. Clear, effective written and verbal communication, with the ability to build trust across technical and non-technical audiences. A record of navigating ambiguity, resolving conflict, and creating clarity for those around you. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD practices, and modern iterative software delivery. Experience building or integrating customer-communication systems, such as SMS, email, voice, or chat channels. Experience integrating third-party vendor platforms, such as conversational AI platforms or messaging providers. Experience building or integrating AI and LLM-powered applications, or a demonstrated drive to build that depth quickly. Nice to Have Familiarity with Salesforce, including Marketing Cloud. Education/Certifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience Our Stack Our engineering teams work with TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS. We practice CI/CD, favor infrastructure as code, and build on REST APIs and event-driven architectures. We use AI tooling such as Claude and Copilot every day, and build on foundation models and third-party conversational AI platforms. Salesforce, including Marketing Cloud, is a significant part of our technology landscape; some teams build directly on the platform, while others integrate with Salesforce-managed APIs. Experience with these is a strong plus, though we care more about depth of thinking, adaptability, and the drive to keep learning than familiarity with any specific tool. Actual compensation within the range will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications, location, and applicable employment laws.
