About the Role

We’re looking for a Graduate Engineer to join our Grid & Electrical Engineering team in Cape Town as part of a two-year graduate development programme.

The programme provides practical exposure across three key technical disciplines: Grid Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and SCADA Engineering. Working under the guidance of experienced Senior and Lead Engineers, the Graduate Engineer will contribute to utility-scale renewable energy projects across different stages of the project lifecycle.

The programme is structured to support professional development towards ECSA Candidate Engineer registration and, ultimately, professional registration.

Key Responsibilities

Grid Engineering

  • Assist with the preparation of inputs for power system studies and the review of grid study reports, including load flow, fault level, and protection coordination studies.
  • Support the preparation of grid connection applications and technical submissions to Eskom or the relevant network operator.
  • Assist with reviewing Eskom Transmission and Distribution technical requirements.
  • Support Grid Code compliance documentation and related technical activities.

Electrical Engineering

  • Support the preparation of electrical design documentation, including single-line diagrams, equipment schedules, and cable sizing calculations.
  • Assist with the technical review of vendor drawings and equipment submissions.
  • Gain exposure to equipment including transformers, MV switchgear, cables, and earthing systems.
  • Participate in site inspections during construction and commissioning under the supervision of Senior or Lead Engineers.

SCADA Engineering

  • Assist with the preparation of SCADA and protection relay functional specifications.
  • Support the review of vendor technical documentation.
  • Gain practical exposure to SCADA engineering requirements within utility-scale renewable energy projects.

Graduate Development

  • Maintain a structured engineering logbook aligned with ECSA competency requirements.
  • Complete defined learning milestones and participate in internal and external technical training.
  • Participate in design reviews, project meetings, and site visits to develop practical engineering judgement.
  • Prepare concise technical summaries and internal reports to strengthen engineering communication skills.
  • Work closely with Senior and Lead Engineers and contribute to the continuous improvement of team processes and documentation.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • BEng or BSc (Eng) in Electrical Engineering, preferably specialising in Power or Energy Systems. A BTech qualification will also be considered.
  • Eligible for ECSA Candidate Engineer registration, or already registered.
  • Valid South African driver’s licence.
  • The job description specifies at least two years’ professional/industry experience.

Preferred

  • Foundational knowledge of power systems analysis and electrical network design.
  • Familiarity with the South African Grid Code and Eskom technical requirements.
  • Exposure to power system simulation tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS/E, or PSCAD through academic projects or practical experience.
  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD or a similar CAD tool.
  • Academic, internship, vacation-work, or project exposure to MV/HV electrical equipment.

Competencies

Technical

  • Foundational understanding of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams and equipment schedules.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to develop skills in power system simulation tools, with DIgSILENT PowerFactory preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and structured analytical thinking.

Behavioural

  • Intellectual curiosity and a strong willingness to learn.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Self-motivated with strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Professional integrity and commitment to quality engineering practices.
  • Willingness to take ownership of assigned responsibilities and escalate issues appropriately.

Why Join Us

Join a purpose-driven organisation at the forefront of renewable energy in Southern Africa. As a Graduate Engineer, you will gain practical exposure across Grid, Electrical, and SCADA Engineering while contributing to utility-scale renewable energy projects and learning from experienced engineering professionals.

This two-year programme offers a structured foundation for developing your technical capability, practical engineering judgement, and professional experience while working towards ECSA professional registration.
