Director, Compensation.

FULL TIMEHYBRIDLEADERSHIPPEOPLE & OPS

About the role

Riot is seeking a Director of Compensation to establish a comprehensive compensation framework.

This role leads the end-to-end design, implementation, and ongoing governance of Riot's foundational compensation programs, including job architecture, salary structures, executive compensation, and equity, in an environment where limited formal structure currently exists. The Director will build scalable frameworks that support corporate functions, data center operations, and executive leadership. The Director carries direct accountability for executive compensation, equity plan administration, and Board readiness, and is hands-on in the systems and data that bring these programs to life.

This role reports to the Senior Director, Total Rewards & Systems, with close partnership across People Partners, Finance, Legal, and senior leadership.

What you'll do

Compensation Architecture

  • Lead the end-to-end design, implementation, and ongoing governance of Riot's job architecture, including job families, leveling frameworks, and salary structures across a multi-entity organization
  • Ensure job architecture serves as the foundation for Talent Acquisition hiring workflows and employee career frameworks, with clear leveling criteria that support consistent offers, promotions, and career pathing
  • Partner with senior leaders, executives, and People Partners to develop competitive, equitable, and innovative compensation programs that attract and retain top talent
  • Establish market pricing methodology, choose and manage survey sources, and benchmark roles from hourly site technicians to corporate leadership
  • Create compensation guidelines, governance, and decision rules that promote consistency while supporting business agility

Executive Compensation and Board Readiness

  • Own preparation of all Compensation Committee materials and recommendations, including executive compensation analyses, equity plan proposals, and performance metrics aligned with business objectives and governance requirements
  • Provide expert guidance to the Board and the SVP, People Operations on compensation matters
  • Own executive compensation modeling, including peer group review, competitive benchmarking, pay-for-performance analysis, and award scenario modeling
  • Design, implement, and directly administer short- and long-term incentive programs, including equity compensation plans (restricted stock units and performance shares) that align employee interests with company success
  • Own compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and reporting requirements across all total rewards programs, including equity plan administration and compensation-related SEC disclosures such as the proxy statement Compensation Discussion and Analysis, in partnership with Legal and Finance

Compensation Planning, Analytics, and Operations

  • Manage key components of the annual compensation planning cycle, including merit, bonus, and equity refresh
  • Leverage compensation analytics, market intelligence, and AI to inform strategy, improve outcomes, and anticipate changing workforce needs
  • Strengthen compensation operations through scalable processes, governance frameworks, and data-informed decision tools
  • Conduct pay equity reviews and support compliance with state pay transparency and equal pay requirements
  • Advise leaders and People Partners on offers, promotions, retention, and one-off compensation decisions

Systems and Workflow Integration

  • Serve as the hands-on owner of compensation data in Rippling and Riot's new HCM platform, building data models and configuring job, structure, and range data directly
  • Lead the operational integration of annual compensation cycles across systems and payroll, ensuring clean data inputs and seamless handoffs from planning through payroll execution
  • Partner with HRIS, Payroll, and Talent Acquisition to align compensation data, workflows, and controls across platforms

What you'll bring

  • 10+ years of progressive compensation experience, with at least 3–5 years supporting executive compensation at a publicly traded company
  • 7+ years leading total rewards or compensation programs or teams
  • Proven ability to build and scale total rewards programs and operations, including job architecture, salary structures, and leveling frameworks
  • Experience preparing materials and presentations for Board Committees
  • Advanced Excel modeling skills and the ability to develop analyses from incomplete or unstructured data
  • Hands-on experience with data modeling and compensation configuration in HRIS/HCM platforms, including integration with payroll
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments, independently defining priorities and driving recommendations to completion
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to various audiences
  • Ability to serve as a high-impact individual contributor, with interest in building and leading a team as the function grows
  • Experience in energy, data centers, manufacturing, crypto, or other environments with a large hourly or shift-based workforce
  • Experience with multi-entity organizations, M&A integration, or harmonizing pay across acquired companies

Preferred Qualifications

  • CCP, CECP, or similar certification
  • Experience with Rippling
