Recent advancements in underlying technology have finally made it possible for AI to impact clinical care in a meaningful way. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time. Join the Revolution in Precision Medicine At Tempus, we're leveraging cutting-edge technology to transform healthcare through AI-powered insights. Our proprietary platform connects real-world evidence to deliver actionable intelligence to physicians, ensuring the right treatments reach the right patients at precisely the right time. Our Engineering Culture We operate in small, autonomous teams where developers, designers, scientists, and product managers collaborate closely. You'll have direct ownership in building solutions that make a meaningful impact in cancer research and treatment. Our agile approach and modern architecture enable us to innovate rapidly while maintaining the highest standards of quality and scalability. About the Role We are seeking a highly motivated and capable Senior Software Engineer to help advance our Diagnostics initiatives. In this role, you will lead the analysis and design of complex technical problems, architect robust systems, and mentor emerging talent. This position requires deep expertise in full-stack engineering, relational data systems, bioinformatic workflow orchestration, and algorithmic development. As a senior technical leader, you will be expected to craft high-quality code, scale genomic data processing pipelines, leverage modern AI tooling, integrate APIs into user-facing applications, and embed agentic workflows into our core product ecosystem. Technical Requirements 5+ years of advanced TypeScript/JavaScript/python development with a deep understanding of language features and optimization techniques. Extensive experience architecting and leading development with Node.js and NestJS frameworks. Experience with React development with a demonstrated ability to design and implement complex component systems. Proven experience building, scaling, and maintaining bioinformatics orchestration pipelines for high-throughput genomic data analysis using workflow frameworks such as Nextflow. Hands-on experience managing, monitoring, and optimizing workflow executions via Seqera Platform (Nextflow Tower) across cloud environments. Hands-on experience leveraging GenAI coding tools and autonomous agents (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, LLM APIs) to accelerate development, refactor codebases, and auto-generate comprehensive unit/integration tests. Experience or strong working knowledge of integrating APIs and GenAI technologies into production applications. Advanced PostgreSQL skills including query optimization, indexing strategies, and performance tuning. Proven expertise implementing sophisticated Redis caching solutions for high-throughput systems. Demonstrated success designing and implementing distributed microservice architectures that seamlessly interface with data-intensive bioinformatic workflows. Significant experience orchestrating infrastructure and applications on GCP, including CI/CD pipelines and cloud-based compute backends for pipeline execution. Mastery of enterprise-level design patterns and their practical application in large-scale, mission-critical systems. What Makes You a Great Fit 7+ years of software development experience with a track record of technical leadership. Ability to make high-impact architectural decisions that balance business needs, data infrastructure constraints, and scientific computing requirements. Track record of bridging the gap between software engineering and computational biology/bioinformatics teams to streamline workflow execution and data delivery. Enthusiasm for championing AI-assisted development practices, driving adoption of agentic workflows, and mentoring teams through the evolving landscape of AI tools. History of successfully delivering complex projects in fast-paced environments. Strong communication skills with experience presenting technical solutions to diverse stakeholders. Proven ability to drive cross-team technical initiatives and resolve complex engineering challenges. Bonus Points Advanced expertise in Nextflow (DSL2) custom module/subworkflow development and integration with cloud-native storage/compute engines (e.g., GCP Batch, Life Sciences API, or AWS Batch). Experience with search technologies such as Elasticsearch or OpenSearch. Experience with containerization orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes). Background in biotech, genomics, or precision medicine. CHI: $110,000-$160,000 The expected salary range may vary for other locations. Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Tempus offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits depending on the position. We are an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Tempus was founded in August of 2015 by Eric Lefkofsky, after his wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Shortly after he founded the company in an effort to bring the power of technology and artificial intelligence to cancer care, he convinced Ryan Fukushima to join as the company’s first employee. Ryan and Eric began assembling a world class team, focused on building the first version of a platform capable of ingesting real time healthcare data in an effort to personalize diagnostics. We built the platform for oncology and have expanded it to neuropsychiatry, cardiology, infectious disease (through COVID), and radiology. Despite our rapid growth, our mission remains the same—to help make sure patients are on the right drug at the right time, so they can live longer and healthier lives. We’re looking for people who can change the world. Who question the status quo and don’t shy away from tough problems. For the builders who are never done building and the learners who are never done learning. We’re looking for passionate people with undying curiosity. Those who want to attack one of the most challenging problems mankind has ever faced. Head on.
