As a rapidly growing company, we offer several opportunities for internal growth and career development. We’re committed to the motivated professionals that work at Billd, but don’t just take our word for it. Check out our 4.3 Glassdoor rating to see what our team has to say about working here.

But the praise doesn’t stop there. Some of our awards include:

  • 2x Best Places to Work (Forbes, BuiltIn)
  • 1x Best CEO Nomination (Austin Business Journal)
  • 1x Top 10 Startups in Austin (LinkedIn)

This role is based at our Austin, TX headquarters. Our team works in office together, with added flexibility available through our work-from-home allowance. Our dog-friendly office features a fully stocked kitchen, on-site fitness room, and hosts quarterly company-wide team events. This role is not eligible for fully remote work.

The Role

Billd is looking for a Chief Technology Officer to lead our combined Product and Technology team and join the executive team. We are well into our AI transformation as a company, and our development team is AI-first. Our vision is “building new financial and technology products to empower subcontractors to do the best work of their lives.” As CTO, you will own the technology and product strategy behind that vision, including the platform that powers Material Financing, Pay App Advance, Flex Line, and Predictable Pay, and you will build it hands-on alongside that nimble, talented, AI-first team. Reporting to the CEO, you will lead product, engineering, Salesforce, QA, and IT, and partner closely with the GM of Financial Products.

Success in this role looks like a highly capable Product and Technology team that punches above its weight, deploying products our customers love and use every day.

The ideal candidate is a technology executive with deep fintech and AI experience who thinks strategically but also gets into the details. You will make the hard engineering and architecture calls yourself, and as a member of the executive team you will help lead the next growth phase of our business. You spend time with customers to understand where technology can open new business opportunities, you treat security and compliance as part of the architecture, and you enjoy developing the people around you.

Key Responsibilities

Executive Leadership and Strategy

  • Serve on the executive team and help lead the next growth phase of the business, contributing to company strategy and reporting on technology to the Board as needed.
  • Set Billd’s technology and product strategy and own the roadmap in partnership with the executive team.

AI Leadership

  • Lead the next stage of Billd’s AI transformation, both in how we build software and in the products and tools our customers and teams use every day.
  • Track emerging AI models, tools, and practices, and bring the ones that matter into how Billd works.

Hands-On Engineering and Architecture

  • Own platform architecture and make the hard engineering and architecture decisions, including build-versus-buy.
  • Write, review, and ship code alongside the team.
  • Own delivery, reliability, and uptime of Billd’s platform.
  • Build on our AI-first development practices, including AI coding agents, automated testing, and clear review standards, that raise the bar on speed and quality.

Product, Customers, and Business Opportunity

  • Own the product vision and roadmap, partnering with the VP of Product on strategy, prioritization, and delivery of customer-facing products.
  • Work closely and directly with customers, partners, and others in the industry to understand market needs and key use cases.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to identify growth opportunities and turn them into products that create new value for our customers and new revenue for Billd.
  • Build processes for gathering customer feedback and usage data, and use them to measure product-market fit and prioritize what we build next.
  • Partner with the GM of Financial Products to deliver the technology behind Billd’s financial products.

Security, Compliance, and Data

  • Own information security, IT, cloud infrastructure, and physical facilities, including SOC 2 compliance, and ensure the platform meets the security and compliance standards expected of a financial services company.
  • Own Billd’s data platform, including warehouse, databases, and governance, so every team can get trusted answers on its own, increasingly through AI.

Team Leadership

  • Recruit and hire top product and engineering talent as the business grows.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Product and Technology team for professional growth and retention.
  • Manage the technology budget, tools, and vendors, investing where each dollar creates the most impact.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 12+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years leading engineering and product teams as a CTO, VP of Engineering, or Head of Product and Engineering.
  • B2B fintech experience in commercial credit, payments, working capital, or embedded finance.
  • AI-forward in practice: you have personally built with LLMs and AI coding agents and led an AI-first development team.
  • Hands-on technical depth; you still write and review code and are comfortable in our stack: Python (FastAPI), Vue and TypeScript, PostgreSQL, and AWS.
  • Deep expertise in security and compliance for regulated financial data.
  • Experience managing cloud operations for reliability, scalability, and security in AWS.
  • Has led a company through SOC 2 compliance, from readiness through audit, and kept it maintained.
  • Track record of leading high-output engineering and product teams in a startup or growth-stage company.
  • Product leadership experience: has owned a product roadmap tied to customer outcomes and business results.
  • Comfortable in front of customers and partners, and able to connect what we build to the opportunities it creates for the business.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop engineers.
  • Salesforce platform experience is strongly preferred.
  • B2B SMB or payments-platform experience is a plus.
  • Experience presenting to a Board of Directors is a plus.
  • Challenges how things have always been done; picks the best modern tool for the job and changes course when the evidence changes.
  • Executive presence; communicates technology strategy clearly to the executive team, partners, and customers, and just as clearly to engineers.
