Durango, Colorado

Technical Accounting & Tax Compliance Manager.

FULL TIMEFINANCE & LEGAL$115K–140K/MO

Position Overview

  • Reports to the CFO and partners closely with the Controller to strengthen financial reporting, compliance, and risk management as Spriggs Excavation scales toward $150M in revenue.
  • Owns GAAP-compliant revenue recognition under ASC 606 and the monthly WIP schedule, a key input to the Controller's month-end close, and supports the close with equipment costing, fixed asset and depreciation, and lease accounting entries.
  • Responsible for multi-state tax compliance, fuel tax filings, state and local licensing, the lien waiver process, and subcontractor compliance.
  • Proactive problem solver who takes the time to learn Spriggs' existing processes and systems, then drives improvements that benefit the company and the clients we serve.
  • Full-time, exempt, in-office position located near La Plata County Airport in Durango, Colorado, with a quickly growing company.
  • Pay range: $115,000–$140,000 (exempt).
  • Application deadline: November 31, 2026

Duties

Revenue Recognition, WIP & Technical Accounting

  • Own GAAP-compliant revenue recognition under ASC 606 for construction contracts, including percentage-of-completion measurement, contract modifications, and variable consideration.
  • Prepare the monthly WIP schedule, including cost-to-complete estimates, over- and under-billings, and gross margin variance by job, working directly with project managers to validate estimates and forecasts.
  • Deliver the WIP schedule and revenue recognition entries to the Controller by the close calendar deadline for posting and GL reconciliation, and present job-level fades, gains, and margin trends to the CFO and operations leadership each month.
  • Reconcile the WIP schedule to job cost and billing reports each month, resolving coding and billing discrepancies with project teams before close.
  • Prepare the WIP, contract asset and liability, and backlog schedules required by owners, lenders, sureties, and the outside audit or review team.
  • Support the Controller with the year-end audit or review and with lender and surety reporting, including supporting schedules and contract-related financial statement disclosures.
  • Evaluate and document the GAAP treatment of leases (ASC 842), equipment financing, and other significant transactions.
  • Help design, document, and test internal controls over financial reporting and compliance, maintaining documentation sufficient to withstand owner, lender, surety, and third-party audits, and identify and support improvements to the close and reporting process in partnership with the Controller.

Month-End Close Support

  • Prepare monthly equipment costing entries allocating equipment costs to jobs, and reconcile equipment cost recovery to actual equipment expense.
  • Prepare monthly fixed asset addition, disposal, and depreciation entries and maintain the fixed asset roll forward, coordinating with the Asset Manager.
  • Reconcile the balance sheet accounts tied to this role's work each month, including contract assets and liabilities, fixed assets and accumulated depreciation, ROU assets and lease liabilities, and accrued tax liabilities.
  • Deliver assigned close entries and reconciliations on the Controller's close calendar for review and approval.
  • Maintain the ASC 842 lease schedule and prepare monthly right-of-use asset amortization and lease liability entries, identifying new, modified, and terminated equipment and real estate leases.

Multi-State Tax, Fuel Tax & Tax Depreciation

  • Own state tax nexus tracking and apportionment across all active states and future expansion states.
  • Manage state income/franchise and pass-through entity tax filings and related requirements, coordinating with outside tax advisors.
  • Manage sales, use, and gross receipts tax compliance across operating states, including New Mexico GRT, Arizona TPT prime contracting, and Colorado use tax.
  • Register the company in new states as work expands, coordinating withholding and unemployment accounts with Payroll.
  • Manage business personal property tax filings for equipment across all jurisdictions.
  • Own tax depreciation and reconcile tax and book depreciation, coordinating with the Controller and Asset Manager.
  • Monitor changing state tax law affecting multi-state construction operations.
  • Own the IRS Form 8849 (Schedule 1) off-highway fuel tax refund process end-to-end.

FP&A Support

  • Support the CFO in annual budgeting, rolling forecasts, and job-level variance analysis.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Own the lien waiver process across all active projects, including conditional and unconditional waivers, upper- and lower-tier subcontractor and supplier waivers, and tracking against pay application cycles, with AP collecting waivers within the payment cycle.
  • Maintain the compliance document library for owners, general contractors, and lenders, including W-9s, certificates of insurance, bonding documentation, and prequalification packages.
  • Verify subcontractor and supplier compliance before AP releases payment, confirming waivers are received, insurance is current, and 1099/W-9 documentation is on file; AP holds payment until this sign-off.
  • Manage state and local business licensing, registration, and contractor registration renewals across all operating jurisdictions.
