The Low Voltage Technician builds the structured cabling that client networks, security systems, and audio-visual systems run on. You will pull copper and fiber, and terminate, label, and test copper, in offices, medical facilities, data centers, industrial sites, and mine sites, working from plan sets under the direction of a senior technician.
This is a field role and the entry point to the Cabling + Security team. You will spend most days at client sites, working with the Field Operations Lead, the Project Manager, physical security technicians, and other trades to finish each phase on schedule. New construction means rough-in first and a return trip to terminate and test. Occupied buildings sometimes mean after-hours work. Some client sites and mine sites require site-specific safety training, a background check, or drug screening before you can work there.
Technicians who build their cabling skills can move into senior cabling work or into physical security (access control, video surveillance, and intrusion) as openings come up. This seat is open as a W-2 employee position or as a contractor engagement. W-2 employees receive company-paid certifications and training.
Responsibilities:
- Pull and route Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, coaxial, and fiber optic cable through ceilings, walls, and conduit, working from ladders and lifts
- Install pathways and supports, including J-hooks, cable tray, and innerduct
- Seal penetrations through fire-rated walls and floors with the firestop system the job specifies
- Dress cable into racks and panels, terminate copper on jacks and patch panels, and label every cable, faceplate, and panel port
- Build out telecom rooms: mount racks, patch panels, and cable management, and install rack grounding and bonding as the design shows
- Run copper certification tests with a Trend Networks LanTEK IV under a senior technician's direction, and save the results for the closeout package
- Run and terminate the cabling for cameras, card readers, door hardware, wireless access points, and displays, and mount devices ready for configuration when the scope calls for it
- Read floor plans and drawings, follow the scope, and mark redlines when the installed work differs from the plan
- Photograph completed work and log your time and notes against the project in HaloPSA
- Tell the Field Operations Lead or Project Manager about site conditions, scope changes, and client requests as soon as they come up
- Keep tools, test equipment, and materials secure, accounted for, and in working order
- Follow Unió Digital's safety program: complete the daily pre-task plan, wear required protective equipment, and report hazards, near misses, and incidents
Qualifications:
- Low voltage cabling experience, or comparable construction, electrical, or telecom field experience, is preferred
- Able to read a floor plan and follow a scope of work; familiarity with copper termination and labeling is a plus
- Able to use hand and power tools safely, and willing to learn cable certification and fiber optic work
- Reliable, on time, and professional with clients, general contractors, and other trades on site
- Able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to climb ladders, work from lifts and in ceilings and tight spaces, lift and carry cable and equipment, and work in heat and dust
- Valid driver's license and a driving record that Unió Digital's vehicle insurer accepts
- OSHA 10-hour Construction card, or willingness to earn one after hire
- BICSI Installer 1 or equivalent training is a plus
- Eligible to work in the U.S., based in or relocating to one of the listed hiring locations, and able to meet the published travel requirements
